The Hematopathology Department has been operating since 1983 and continues to serve as a Reference Center of the National Health System (ESY) for Hematopoietic and Lymphoid tissue diseases (decision 30/101 KESY/15-7-93) and is the only laboratory of its kind in Greece.

It has achieved accreditation of its services by ESYD according to the ELOT EN ISO 15189:2012 standard (Certificate Number 1147-1⬇️). It participates in external quality assessment (EQA) schemes such as UK NEQAS for specialized immunohistochemistry techniques.

The Department employs the most modern methods for tissue study and provides highly reliable diagnostic tests. For this purpose, the following sections have been developed:

• Immunohistochemistry Section (since 1985)

• Molecular Biology/PCR Section (since 1994)

• Molecular Cytogenetics Section [in situ hybridization (ISH), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)] (since 2006).

The Department collaborates with the Center of Expertise for Amyloidosis in the field of Rare Hematological Diseases (AL Amyloidosis) and Rare Cardiological Diseases (ATTR Amyloidosis) of the Plasma Cell Dyscrasias Unit of the Therapeutic Clinic of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (25th Meeting of the Board of Directors, 24-8-2022⬇️).

It trains doctors, biologists, and histotechnologists. The Department participates in educational, postgraduate, and postdoctoral programs. On a research level, it participates in the preparation of doctoral theses, diploma projects, research protocols, in Greek and International working groups on Lymphoid and Hematopoietic tissue, and in International and Greek Conferences.
